There are a number of government offices that are involved in the process of getting married in Ontario. The local municipality issues marriage licences, and the Office of the Registrar General (ORG) is responsible for registering marriages and issuing marriage certificates.
To be married in Ontario, you must fill out a marriage licence. You can get one from the Financial Services Division of the Town of St. Marys, or the municipal office of most other cities, towns, villages or townships OR from the Ministry of Government Services Website.
Once you have filled out the application, apply for the marriage licence in person. Make sure you and your partner bring identification, such as a birth certificate (along with any change of name certificates), current passport, Record of Immigrant Landing or Canadian citizenship card, along with photo identification.
The fee for purchasing a marriage licence varies by municipality. The Town of St. Marys current fee is $100.00. The marriage licence is valid anywhere in Ontario for three months from the date of purchase.
The “Requirements Respecting Marriage in Ontario” is provided by the Office of the Registrar General, and we suggest you read this document thoroughly. You may also visit their website at www.cbs.gov.on.ca/mcbs/english/marriages.htm for more information.
