Triathlon

The Stonetown Triathlon - happening Summer 2026! On Sunday, July 5, young athletes aged 8-19 years will swim in the quarry, cycle our streets, and run along the Thames River.

About the Stonetown Triathlon

The Stonetown Triathlon, organized by the Balance Point Triathlon Club, offers thrilling races for youth aged 8-19. In addition to competitive drafting races for older athletes, it includes recreational and non-drafting events for younger participants.

A triathlon combines swimming, biking, and running into one continuous event, with distances tailored to age groups. Athletes wear timing chips to track their race, and results are posted online. Spectators are encouraged to cheer from the sidelines.

Impacts to Residents

The St. Marys Quarry will open late (3:00 pm) on Sunday, July 5 to accommodate the swimming portion of the triathlon.

The following roads will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 5 to keep the cycling route clear:

  • Thomas St. from Park St. to the Sewage Treatment Plant
  • Park St. from Thomas St. to Water St. S
  • Water St. S from Park St. to the entrance of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame

Police, Town staff, and volunteers will be onsite to help direct traffic.

Residents on Thomas St., Park St. and Water St. will have limited driveway access during the road closures. Motorists will not be able to exit or re-enter their driveways until the road has re-opened.

Impacted residents are encouraged to park on nearby side streets during the road closures.

Residents with mobility issues who require access to their driveway can contact our Public Works Coordinator at 519-284-2340, ext. 213 or tredman@town.stmarys.on.ca to make special arrangements.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ's)

Organizers approached the Town after participating in the Ontario Summer Games in August 2024:

  • It could make more people aware of St. Marys and the quarry
  • It could increase tourism, bringing more money to local businesses
  • It promotes an active lifestyle and could inspire more people to play sports
  • It could bring the community together in a positive way
  • It gives us a chance to show our community pride

With these opportunities in mind, staff made the decision to move forward with the event.

The route was developed around the quarry since the swimming portion of the triathlon comes first.

The cycling route came next. There are specific requirements for the cycling route because of the racing bicycles used by the athletes. The surface of the route must:

  • Be made of high-quality asphalt with no topcoat treatments
  • Have no railway crossings
  • Have no restrictions with respect to grade elevation changes
  • Have no parked cars

Yes! Residents with properties on Thomas St., Park St. and Water St. S will have front row seats to the action. We encourage people to cheer on the athletes on as they cycle past.
