Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Edwards has retired after serving on the St. Marys Fire Department for 23 years.
Kevin joined the department as a firefighter in January 2001. From the start, he displayed a keen interest in rising through the ranks of the fire officer program. He was promoted to Captain in 2014 and became Deputy Fire Chief in 2022. During his career, Kevin responded to an estimated 2,200 emergencies. He is a recipient of the 20-year Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal.
“After a rewarding 23 years, I have gained a lifelong bond with many past and present members of the St. Marys Fire Department. It has been an honour to give back to my community,” says Kevin. “The opportunities that have been given to me over the years have changed my life for the better.”
“The St. Marys Fire Department wishes to acknowledge the retirement of Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Edwards,” notes Fire Chief Richard “Andy” Anderson. “Kevin’s departure is certainly a loss to the Town as he has proudly served our community with professionalism, proficiency, and determination over the last 23 years.”
“We are thankful for Kevin’s leadership, for the superb team that he has helped develop, for the knowledge and skills that he brought to the role, and for his unwavering support, particularly with the numerous fundraising events over the years.”
“As the Fire Chief, I will miss Kevin's stories, camaraderie, and his ‘adapt and overcome’ outlook on life. Our community was made safer thanks to his dedication and leadership. I wish him and his family the very best in their next adventure.”
“On behalf of myself and Council, I would like to thank Kevin for his lengthy service with the St. Marys Fire Department,” adds Mayor Al Strathdee. "Kevin’s familiarity within and of the community is a testament to his dedication.”
Captain Phil West has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Fire Chief to replace Kevin. Town officials, the public and members of the Fire Department plan to show their appreciation for Kevin’s contribution with an official ceremony in the coming months.
