Communities across Canada are facing a shortage of affordable housing options, and St. Marys is no exception.
Locally, there are very few rental options available. Even when vacancies arise, rents are often higher than what the average earner can afford.
We know that this is an issue, and that everyone deserves a place to call home.
Over the past several years, we have taken a number of actions to address the housing shortage, including:
- Introducing Official Plan policies that encourage and permit more affordable and attainable housing
- Amending the Zoning by-law to permit secondary units and more efficient, cost-effective housing
- Updating the Community Improvement Plan to include grants for property owners who convert vacant or underused spaces to rental units
- Encouraging affordable and attainable housing through the pre-consultation and development application review process
Attainable Housing Action Plan
In 2023, we further demonstrated our commitment to creating new homes by launching Opening Doors: An Attainable Housing Action Plan for the Town of St. Marys.
Opening Doors was developed by a housing expert, following consultations with developers, builders, and community members. It was approved by Council in February 2023.
The plan sets out an ambitious goal of creating 200 new rental units in St. Marys by 2027, with 30 of these falling into the attainable housing category.

The plan identifies four focus areas to help achieve these targets. Click each focus area below to learn more and see the progress we have made to date.
Focus Area 1: Policies |
We will review and update internal policies as part of our efforts to increase our housing stock. Changes will be made to help retain current rental units and encourage the building/development of new rental homes.
