Work scheduled to begin this spring
After surveying the public, gathering feedback from elementary school students and receiving Council approval, Town of St. Marys staff have finalized the design for the future Cadzow Park splash pad. The grassland-themed structure proposed by Open Solutions – known as Option 3 during the public consultation period - emerged as the preferred design.
The 1600 square foot, accessible splash pad will have 27 water features spread out over two separates areas – one for toddlers and one for children and youth. The child and youth section will include sprayers, cannons, dump buckets, water-o’s and a puddle pad; the toddler area will have gentle, low-level water features that promote collaborative play. There will be plenty of seating around the splash pad’s perimeter for parents and caregivers.
Based on feedback received through the public input process, Town staff explored the feasibility of adding a rubber coating to the splash pad’s surface. Given the price of installation, maintenance and repairs, the Town has opted to stick with the concrete surface that was proposed in the original design.
“There were a number of useful suggestions that came out of the splash pad survey and our conversations with staff and community stakeholders,” said Grant Brouwer, the Town’s Director of Building and Development. “We have considered all the feedback and feel we have a design that is practical, cost-effective and will provide a fun and accessible experience for years to come.”
Work on the splash pad will begin in late April or early May. Cadzow Park will remain open during the project; however, the playground may be closed for short periods. Signage will be posted at the playground to indicate closures. Park users are asked to exercise caution while the work is being done.
The installation of the splash pad is being supported by a $100,000 donation from the Rotary Club of St. Marys. A pavilion and performing arts stage will also be added to the park in 2018, thanks to a $20,000 donation from the St. Marys Lions Club.
