This July the St. Marys Fire Department is pleased to announce Lucas Jeffrey as its “Firefighter of the Month”.
“Firefighter Lucas Jeffrey was selected for his 8 years of dedicated service to the department,” said Fire Chief Richard “Andy” Anderson. “He demonstrates a high level of technical competence when performing a broad range of assignments. He has always been noted for handling situations in a calm objective manner.”
Jeffrey joined the St. Marys Fire Department (SMFD) as a firefighter in 2015. Prior to joining SMFD he had obtained his Firefighter Level I & II, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certifications. Through continuous education programs he has acquired Ice Water Awareness, Advance Auto Extrication, Fire Service Level I Instructor and Fire Officer Level I certificates.
“Volunteer firefighters often have the opportunity to help people during the most difficult times of their lives,” said Jeffrey. “Firefighters have a unique and challenging job and train hard to earn their positions. This often creates a sense of camaraderie among firefighters and other emergency personnel. If anyone is looking for a work environment that provides strong friendships, it may be beneficial to pursue a volunteer firefighter position at your local fire department.”
“Lucas is a firefighter that strives to grow professionally through continuous study and participation,” said Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Edwards. “We are lucky to have Lucas as part of our team as he is an important contributor to the success of the department.”
Lucas was born and raised in St. Marys. He became interested in firefighting while attending high school. When asked if there were any influences that helped steered him towards a career in firefighting, Lucas replied, “My mom was a paramedic for many years, and I wanted the opportunity to serve my community like she had.”
Lucas was asked what is one of his favourite memories about being a part of the fire department he responded, “One of my favourite memories is getting the opportunity to interact with the community we serve. I especially find it rewarding to be able to show children the trucks and equipment we use. “
When he is not busy with firefighting calls or continuing his firefighting education, Lucas is employed at PBR Fur Farms.
