Firefighters to collect scrap metal on April 29 as fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy

Changes to collection made due to resource, safety and landfill concerns

On April 29 Town of St. Marys firefighters will volunteer their time to collect scrap metal in order to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy. Residents wishing to participate should place their scrap metal to the curb no later than 7:00 a.m. on the day of the pick-up. Any appliances must have refrigerant removed.

Unlike in previous years, household bulk items will not be collected. Also not collected: hazardous liquids or paint, household garbage, brush and yard clippings, tires, construction or demolition materials, and commercial or industrial materials.

In a report to Town Council scheduled for March 21, Fire Chief Richard Anderson outlines the reasons for changes to the collection. The firefighters discussed several alternatives, but ultimately decided on collecting scrap metal only due to resources and time required to keep up with increasing collection demands, strain placed on the landfill, which is currently near capacity, and the potential for injury to volunteers. The change is unlikely to have an impact on the amount of funds they will be able to raise for Muscular Dystrophy.

“The firefighters did not come to this decision easily,” says Anderson, “They didn’t want to let anyone down, but knew something had to change to ensure the safety and sustainability of the program. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and hope residents will continue to support us as we raise money for a great cause.”
