The Study
The Town of St. Marys (Town) and R.J. Burnside & Associates Limited (Consultant) have prepared an Individual Environmental Assessment (EA) under the Environmental Assessment Act for the identification and selection of a preferred solid waste disposal option. The Town has reviewed options to manage solid waste over the next 40 years. The preferred alternative is to expand the existing landfill at 1221 Water Street South. A number of methods of expansion are possible at the site. Work plans were undertaken to evaluate the landfill expansion options. A draft of the EA is being sent to the Ministry of The Environment and Climate Change (MOECC) for a review before final submission. Our analysis recommends a combined vertical and horizontal expansion of the St. Marys landfill.
Consultation
Members of the public, agencies and other interested persons are encouraged to review the study and submit comments regarding the report’s findings. Draft availability notices are being advertised on the Town’s website, in the local newspapers, as well as through direct communications with local landowners, Indigenous communities, review agencies and utilities.
The Draft EA will be publicly accessible at the Municipal Operations Centre, as well as online at the Town’s website. A review period of five weeks will be given to review the EA and submit comments.
