There's fun for everyone Friday, July 12 and Saturday, July 13
Summer’s here and it’s literally time to be dancing in the streets as the 24th edition of the annual Stonetown Heritage Festival takes to the streets of St. Marys!
As announced in March, rising country star and St. Marys native Darcy John returns to rock the iconic street dance the evening of Saturday, July 13, sponsored by St. Marys Ford. Eagle-eyed residents may catch a glimpse of Darcy John’s cardboard twin around town: snap a photo with it and share it on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the tag #stmarysford for the chance to win side-stage passes and Darcy John swag!
Another local favourite kicks off the Heritage Festival on Friday night, July 12, as contemporary bluegrass quartet Corduroy Gordon will play a free concert at the Cadzow Park amphitheater thanks to the Tapley family and Fix Auto. Watch for Corduroy Gordon to take the stage after the opening ceremonies and the presentation of the Heritage Festival Award at 7 p.m.
Saturday’s street fair is chockablock with fun for all ages! The day begins with a delicious pancake breakfast and seasonal goodies at the Farmers’ Market on Jones Street, just a short stroll from all the action on Queen Street!
The Canadian Raptor Conservancy brings high-flying and well-trained birds of prey for three shows plus a “meet and greet” throughout the day, while Trulee Odd will surprise and delight all ages with his unusual talents. Look for the complete schedule and other festival information at www.stmarysheritagefestival.ca.
In addition to inflatables, face painting, and the array of vendors offering intriguing wares and entertaining activities, two new food vendors will be on site to tempt your taste buds: Heavenly Dreams Ice Cream and the Tragically Chip truck. The Sunset Shack and Black Angus will also offer a variety of tasty treats during the street fair.
Hop to it at the Olde Tyme Coffee Sack Races at Lind Park at 1:30 p.m., sponsored by Snapping Turtle Coffee Roasters. Sign up via their Facebook page or in-store.
Need a break from all the fun on Queen Street? Take a free ride on the Appleland Train, with stops at Milt Dunnell Field, the corner of Queen and Water streets (Roancroft) and Lifetime Vision Centre on Wellington Street South, where staff will offer treats and face painting to waiting passengers.
Those looking for local history have three options: sign up at the festival information tent to partake in a heritage bus tour, leaving hourly from Town Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; take a special “20 on the Trestle” walking tour with local historian Larry Pfaff beginning at the boat launch at Milt Dunnell Field at 10 a.m.; or visit the St. Marys Library to make free silhouette art between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Take a breather in the afternoon and return for the street dance, beginning at 7:30 p.m., and cap off the day with the fabulous Rotary Fireworks beginning at approximately 10 p.m.
