There’s no shortage of holiday fun to be had in St. Marys as Christmas draws near.
The next two weekends, visitors to the wonderful WinterLights display will be able to enjoy free horse-drawn wagon rides around Milt Dunnell Field. The rides will be offered December 15 and 16, December 22 and 23, as well as on Christmas Eve, December 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Pick-up is at the north end of the field, near the Lions sign.
There are two new WinterLights displays to take in this year: a dog paddling a canoe, commissioned by the Brennan family in memory of Tom Miller; and a snowmobiler, commissioned by the Science Hill Drifters Snowmobile Club. More information on the generous community partners who sponsor WinterLights, plus information on how you can donate, can be found on the information sign near the pavilion or by visiting www.townofstmarys.com and searching “WinterLights”.
Many community partners are sponsoring free activities at the Pyramid Recreation Centre over the coming weeks. Forman Electric is sponsoring free skates on Sunday, December 16 and Friday, December 28 from 2:45 to 3:35 p.m. The River Road Run is sponsoring a free swim on Thursday, December 27 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and free skating on Sunday, December 23 and Sunday, December 30 from 2:45 to 3:35 p.m. The Kinsmen Club of St. Marys is sponsoring a free skate from 2:45 to 3:35 p.m. on Thursday, December 27.
Residents can give back to the community on Saturday, December 15. Canadian Tire and the St. Marys Youth Council are having a “toy drive, swim and movie” event at the Pyramid Recreation Centre. Donate a toy to swim from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and then enjoy the holiday classic Home Alone from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Andemar Dust and Ice Control, McDonald’s Independent, and Kitchen Smidgen bakery are additional sponsors for this event.
The Pyramid Recreation Centre is the place for families to be on New Year’s Eve, Monday, December 31. Tim Hortons is sponsoring skating on both ice pads and Scotiabank is sponsoring a free swim, both from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Revelers can then ring in the New Year with a balloon drop at 8:15 p.m.
If you’re checking off your Christmas shopping list in downtown St. Marys, be sure to pick up a Christmas cracker at the St. Marys Museum, Station Gallery or Library first and then return the ballot inside to any participating downtown business to be eligible to win some of the featured books as part of the Museum’s collaborative Ink & Imagination exhibit.
