Firefighters’ waste pickup Saturday, April 27 and more
The biennial Volunteer Firefighters’ scrap metal pick-up is Saturday, April 27, as a fundraiser for Muscular Dystrophy. Residents are asked to have their items at the curb no later than 7 a.m.; items placed out after the initial pick-up will not be picked up.
The following items are not acceptable for pick-up:
Residents wishing to dispose of other are encouraged to visit the St. Marys Landfill, which accepts recyclables, leaf and yard waste, brush material and Municipal Hazardous or Special Waste for free. The St. Marys Landfill will not accept tires or refrigerators. Leaf and yard waste collection begins May 20. The St. Marys Kinsmen Club will be picking up electronic waste the same morning, as a fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis. Please have your items to the curb no later than 8 a.m.

Residents are asked to separate their e-waste and scrap metal to streamline the pick-up process.
Municipal staff and the newly formed Green Committee of Town Council hope to educate social media users on waste diversion strategies during Earth Week. From April 22 to 26 on the @townofstmarys Twitter feed and the @stmarysontario Facebook feed, look for a variety of posts detailing acceptable items for recycling, yard waste pick-up, hazardous waste disposal and more.
Earth Week begins on Saturday, April 20, when the annual Thames River Clean-Up takes place. Volunteers are asked to gather at Milt Dunnell Field at 9 a.m. to receive supplies and a location to clean. All volunteers will receive a free barbecue lunch and a reusable stainless steel drinking straw for their efforts. For more information on the clean-up, contact Todd Sleeper at 519-275-1351.
