Amazing free events happening high above St. Marys
The Grand Trunk Trail in St. Marys will be the place to be next week, as the 20 on the Trestle celebration reaches new heights with fabulous, free activities for all ages.
The week of August 5-10 is bookended by two incredible events. On Monday, Aug. 5, pack a picnic meal and blanket or lawn chair to enjoy music on the trestle from 5 to 8 p.m. In honour of the years the trail and trestle were constructed, a DJ will be spinning ‘90s tunes. Get in your request by joining the event page on the town's Facebook page. This entertaining ending to the long weekend is courtesy of The Flower Shop and More and Kitchen Smidgen.
On Saturday, Aug. 10 from 8 to 11 p.m. the trail and trestle will be spectacularly lit for all to enjoy. Known as “Nuit Blanche St. Marys”, the event will include interactive displays, lots of seating to enjoy the experience, strolling performances from Bex in Motion (complete with glowing accessories), and free glow sticks!
Due to the special nature of this event, the only entry point to Nuit Blanche will be at the Wellington Street North trailhead. Additionally, the Grand Trunk Trail will be closed from Salina to Wellington streets beginning at noon on Saturday, Aug. 10 for set-up. This unique, rain-or-shine event is made possible through Thames Crest Farms and its partner builders: Bickell Built Homes, Larry Otten Contracting, Heritage Homes and Teahen Homes. Join the Facebook event page for a sneak peek of the night.
Need a mid-week music fix? Enjoy a free concert by Thorn and Roses on Thursday, Aug. 8 at 6:30 p.m., sponsored by the Army, Navy Air Force Veterans Club. Enjoy three-part harmonies and unique arrangements of country, classic rock and pop hits. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets for this one-hour show.
On Friday, Aug. 9, astronomy buffs will have another opportunity to see the moon and stars with the volunteers of the Stratford Astronomy Group. Gather at 9 p.m. at the Wellington Street North trail head and keep your fingers crossed for clear skies! Personal telescopes are welcome.
The following week, fitness and friends dominate the trestle. Try a Zumba dance fitness class on Monday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m., Friendship Centre Fitness on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at 9 a.m., or yoga on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 7:15 p.m. The St. Marys Public Library’s popular Tales for Tots will take over the trestle at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16.
The 20 on the Trestle celebration continues into October! See the full list of events at www.townofstmarys.com/20onthetrestle or on the mural in the Andrews Buildings windows at 135 Queen St. E.
