Yoga, photography, fire rescue and more offered as part of 20 on the Trestle
There’s a lot of free fun for all ages happening on the Grand Trunk Trail in the next few weeks, as the community celebrates the 20th anniversary of the trail and its iconic trestle.
The activities begin this Thursday, May 30 with the first in a series of sunset yoga classes on the trestle. The hour-long classes begin at 7:15 p.m. and are intended for all abilities and will be taught by Christa Royal of Yoga for You. Thanks to the generosity of the St. Marys Healthcare Foundation, there will be eight of these free classes offered throughout the summer months. No pre-registration is required but please bring your own mat and other yoga supplies.
Learn how to take a hike with the entire family on Sunday, June 2 thanks to Avon Trail volunteers! The Grand Trunk Trail is part of the 120 km Avon Trail, which extends from the south end of St. Marys to Conestogo. Meet at 1 p.m. at Junction Station to learn hiking etiquette from the volunteers, then enjoy a scavenger hunt and a special hiking route both on and below the trestle.
The trail and trestle are renowned for their beauty and the talented members of the St. Marys Clicks Photography Club will add to this beauty on Thursday, June 6. They’ll be showing some of their favourite photos in a free exhibit called “Pics by Clicks”, beginning at 7 p.m. on the trestle. Rain date is Thursday, June 12.
The trestle will offer a unique vantage point to watch the St. Marys Volunteer Firefighters in action on Wednesday, June 19 at 7 p.m. That evening, the firefighters will undertake water rescue training exercises on the river and Chief “Andy” Anderson will narrate the exercise from the trestle – with a special appearance from Sparky the Fire Dog!
On Friday, June 28, the St. Marys Poetry Circle will put your head in the clouds with readings of original poetry from talented local poets on the theme “Up in the Air”. Be enchanted by their words while taking in the stunning beauty of the trestle, starting at 6:30 p.m.
Please note that the Trail and trestle will remain open for each event. All users are asked to be respectful and walk bicycles if necessary. Parking for all events is available at the Wellington Street access or at Lions Park in Milt Dunnell Field.
Weather delays will be announced via social media: be sure to follow @stmarysontario on Facebook and @townofstmarys on Twitter to stay in the know. More information on all the 20 on the Trestle events can found at www.townofstmarys.com/20onthetrestle.
