Capsule to be buried near the reconstructed Wellington Street Bridge
The Town of St. Marys is offering residents a chance to go down in local history by submitting ideas for items to add to a Canada 150 time capsule. The capsule will be buried near the Wellington Street Bridge and will be opened 50 years from now, in 2067.
The idea behind the capsule is to create a collection of artefacts that reflect the past and present culture of St. Marys and come from local sources. Objects could include event posters, service club memorabilia or clippings of local news stories. As space in the capsule will be limited, each item will need to be small and compact.
Residents who are interested in submitting suggestions for the time capsule can fill out an online form at www.townofstmarys.com/canada150. Hard copy forms are also available at Town facilities. Forms will be accepted until Wednesday, November 1, 2017. Local youth are especially encouraged to submit their ideas, since they will be present when the capsule is re-opened in 2067.
A committee is currently being formed to judge the submission ideas and determine which items will be included in the time capsule. Those interested in joining the committee can call or text Andrea Macko at 519-280-1240.
It was Macko who first proposed the idea of creating the time capsule. She and her husband Andrew Hodges own Andrew L. Hodges Funeral Home and have generously donated the vault that will serve as the time capsule.
The list of selected items for the time capsule will be announced on Thursday, November 23, 2017. The Town is contributing a Canada 150 flag to the time capsule, and is encouraging residents to sign their names or write a message on the flag to be read when the capsule is re-opened. The flag can be signed during business hours at the Pyramid Recreation Centre.
The time capsule will be buried as part of the ribbon cutting ceremony for the reconstructed Wellington Street Bridge. The date for that event will be announced as the construction project nears completion.
