Time capsule to be buried; portion of Wellington Street to be closed
The Wellington Street Bridge reopened to traffic last week, but the bridge will officially go down in history this Saturday, December 9.
A formal re-opening ceremony will take place at 10:00 a.m. on the new bridge. It will include a ribbon cutting by Mayor Al Strathdee and a brief presentation on the history of Wellington Street bridges by local historian Mary Smith.
Wellington Street North, from Queen Street East to Parkview Drive, will be closed from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. to allow for the ceremony.
The Town of St. Marys’ Canada 150 time capsule will also be buried at the ceremony. The time capsule project began in October, when residents were asked to suggest items to be included in the capsule. In late November, a committee of citizens, Council and Town staff judged the submissions based on size, preservability and significance to St. Marys.
Over 30 objects were selected, including pictures of local buildings, posters and programs from events and other artifacts that reflect the culture of the community. Other items, like a receipt from a tank of gas, real estate listings and grocery store flyers will also be included to give future generations a glimpse of what life was like in 2017.
The time capsule will be buried at the southwest corner of Wellington Street North and Parkview Drive, with a plaque placed on the nearby bridge as a reminder to unearth the time capsule in 2067.
Warm refreshments, courtesy of Barista’s, will be available during the ceremony. Guests are invited to bring reusable containers.
