Popular fundraisers reimagined for safety during pandemic

Pandemic purging will pay off for two local organizations as the St. Marys’ Volunteer Firefighters’ scrap metal pick-up and the Kinsmen Club of St. Marys’ electronic waste pick-up return on Saturday, Oct. 3.

Residents are asked to have their scrap metal and electronic waste to the curb no later than 7:00 a.m. on Saturday. The pick-up will run until 6:00 p.m. The Town would like to remind residents that the pick-ups are fundraisers for Muscular Dystrophy and Cystic Fibrosis, so please be respectful of the donations being made and leave them for the firefighters and Kinsmen. Both the firefighters and the Kinsmen will take a number of precautions during the pick-ups to ensure the health and safety of all involved.

Later in October, the Town of St. Marys Fire Department will host a pork chop charity dinner, in support of Muscular Dystrophy, local sports organizations and other charities. As the traditional pigtail supper cannot be safely held due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s meal will be via curbside pickup on Saturday, October 17.

Joe’s Diner will prepare the meal, which will include smoked pork chop, baked potato, vegetable, tuna salad, coleslaw and bun. Tickets are $20 per meal and available in advance from any firefighter. Pick-up will take place in the parking lot of Action Health Care (566 Queen St. E.) from 4 to 7 p.m. Diners are asked to enter from Charles Street into the parking lot.

“The firefighters and Joe’s Diner are looking forward to serving up another great meal to raise much-needed funds for some very deserving charities,” says Fire Chief Richard “Andy” Anderson. “The Fire Department appreciates everyone’s support as we raise money for a great cause.”
