When it comes to individuals willing to go the extra mile for others, St. Marys has them in spades.

At its meeting last week, Town Council recognized six residents for their selfless deeds as part of its “Strong as Stone” program. The program allows people to nominate those whose volunteer acts benefit the community.

Among the group was Cindy Bilyea, whose strong work ethic led her to become chair of the board for St. Marys Minor Hockey, Quadro Communications, and the St. Marys Healthcare Foundation.

Local teen Daniel Greig was recognized for his extensive volunteer work in the community and his involvement with student council at DCVI.

Ine Keller was applauded for her enthusiastic and inspirational teaching of seniors fitness and falls prevention classes.

Jeff Sager’s pastoral work with our local firefighters was acknowledged, as was his past involvement with events like Evan’s Touch the Truck and mock community disasters.

Pam Zabel was nominated twice this round for her tireless work with the Coldest Night of the Year, her contributions to local causes and her time spent on advisory and fundraising committees.

The final recipient was Phylis Spearin, who has spent 55 years giving back to the community as a member of the St. Marys Kinette Club.

“We are incredibly grateful to this generous group of individuals for giving their time, effort and energy to others,” said Mayor Al Strathdee. “Their actions truly embody the Stonetown spirit.”

The next call for Strong as Stone nominations will start in February 2025, with recognition to occur in April as part of National Volunteer Week. An announcement will be made when nominations open through the local media, social media, and Town website (www.townofstmarys.com).
