March 11 designated as a National Day of Observance
In conjunction with the Government of Canada’s recent announcement to designate March 11, 2021 as a National Day of Observance, the Town of St. Marys is offering the Church St. entrance steps of the Public Library as a place for the community to pay tribute to those who have died from Covid-19.
“It’s been just over a year since the first death was recorded in Canada due to Covid-19.” Says Al Strathdee, Mayor of Town of St. Marys, “Our town has remained resilient throughout this pandemic, but we have all felt its impacts. This display will give our community an opportunity to pay tribute to loved ones that have been lost, and sacrifices that have been made.”
Residents are encouraged to leave flowers, cards, painted rocks or any other items that they feel helps them remember those who have lost their lives. They are asked to be mindful of the weather and ensure any items left are secured so they do not become hazards on the surrounding area. Sidewalk chalk is available at the site for those wishing to write a memorial message or picture on the area surrounding the display. Items will be displayed until the morning of March 15 for anyone wishing to collect their items prior to the display being removed.
To date, in Canada there have been over 22,000 deaths due to Covid-19, over 7000 in Ontario and 50 deaths in Huron Perth.
