St. Marys Fire Department receives generous donation from Enbridge Gas

Funds used to purchase a SmartDummy rescue mannequin

The St. Marys Fire Department is once again the recipient of a generous donation. Last month, Fire Chief Richard “Andy” Anderson accepted a $3,000 cheque from Enbridge Gas.

The funds were used toward the purchase of a SmartDummy rescue mannequin. The 110-lb mannequin is made of a heavy-duty canvas material that is tough enough for fire training, but flexible enough to simulate a human victim.

The SmartDummy can handle fire rescue, confined space retrieval, high angle extrication, structural collapse scenarios, rope rescue, vehicle extrication or virtually any other scenario too dangerous or uncomfortable for live victims. The mannequin also has a built-in voice box that makes it an especially effective and life-like training tool.

“With the SmartDummy integrated voice box, we can record specific messages for each training scenario. The SmartDummy can be set to gasp for air, call for help or direct firefighters to search for additional victims,” said Chief Anderson. “Having the ability to add a voice heightens the realism of the training scenario and helps firefighters train to handle distressed victims.”

“The SmartDummy will allow us to create the most realistic victim-involved rescue scenarios, from search and rescue, to extrication,” said Deputy Fire Chief Brent Dundas. “Words can’t express how thankful we are to Enbridge Gas for helping us purchase this invaluable new training tool.”

The Fire Department accepts any donation from individuals or organizations, no matter the amount. Funds can be sent to the Fire Department at PO Box 998, 172 James St. S, St. Marys, ON N4X 1B6 or by contacting Fire Chief Anderson at 519-284-2340, ext. 201.
