Fire Prevention Week kicks off early this year with “Free Fire Extinguishers for Cindy” event.

Fire Prevention Week runs from October 3 to 9 and the St. Marys Fire Department is challenging everyone in St. Marys to test their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and “Get Loud!” as part of Fire Prevention Week.

The St. Marys Fire Department has organized a variety of events and activities for Fire Prevention Week:

October 2: Cindy’s Law Fire Extinguisher Giveaway

They will be starting the week early this year with an extra special event on October 2, where they will be giving out free fire extinguishers, with the purpose of them being kept in vehicles. This event occurs on the one year anniversary of the tragic loss of Cindy Devine, a St. Thomas resident who lost her life when she was pinned inside her vehicle after being struck by a truck and the vehicle caught on fire. Residents are invited to drive through the St. Marys Fire Hall starting at 10:00 a.m.  for a free fire extinguisher (while supplies last). Donations will be greatly appreciated. Those who receive a free fire extinguisher are encouraged to share a photo on social media with #CindysLaw or #ExtinguishersForCindy.

The St. Marys Fire Department wish to thank all of the sponsors who are helping to put fire extinguishers into vehicles: AllRoads Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Ltd., Ashton Tire Service Ltd., Cascades, Dowler-Karn Ltd., Sam’s Home Hardware and the St. Marys Kinsmen.

September 28 to October 9: Get Loud! Colouring Contest
Residents are invited to enter a colouring contest for the chance to win a Fire Chief Experience. More details and the colouring sheet can be found at townofstmarys.com/firepreventionweek. Colouring sheets must be submitted to communications@town.stmarys.on.ca or dropped off at the St. Marys Fire Hall (172 James Street South) on or before October 9.

October 4: Sparky Visit and Swag Bag Booth
Stop by and see our firefighters and Sparky at Your Independent Grocer St. Marys from approximately 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Get a 2021 reusable St. Marys Fire Department bag (with important fire safety information and swag). See Sparky and get a photo with one of the St. Marys fire trucks!

October 6: Annual Door to Door Visits
St. Marys firefighters will be visiting 1000 St. Marys homes in one night to hand out 2021 Swag Bags and help educate the town on the importance of fire safety!

“This year our goal is to have everyone test their alarms to help everyone in their household know the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.” Says St. Marys Fire Chief Richard “Andy” Anderson. “Get Loud! By pushing that test button on all alarms in your home every month to learn the sound alarms make and to ensure the batteries work.”

By law, every home in Ontario must have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas however, too often fatal fires in Ontario occur in homes where there were no working smoke alarms.
