Parade planned to celebrate opening of new Quarry feature
It all started with a simple plan to have St. Marys Mayor Al Strathdee take the first plunge off the relocated cliff jump at the St. Marys Quarry. A few phone calls later, the event has grown to include a parade, a formal ceremony and presentation, and a few special guests from London-based country radio station, BX93.
The added fanfare is the work of St. Marys resident, Brian Harris. Harris is a frequent BX93 caller, and on Tuesday, June 13, he phoned into the station’s morning show to share the news about the opening of the cliff jump at the Quarry. While on the air, Harris invited the hosts to join himself and Mayor Strathdee in jumping off the cliff. On Thursday, June 15, they accepted.
Three of the show’s staff – Forman, Lynzee and Bailey – will be at the Quarry this Saturday, June 17 to take the plunge off the cliff jump. Harris has also organized a small parade to help give his guests a warm, St. Marys welcome. Parade participants will meet at the Pyramid Recreation Centre at 11:30 a.m., and the procession will get underway at approximately 12:15 p.m. The parade will head north on James Street, west on Queen Street through the downtown core, then south on Water Street to the Quarry.
The Quarry officially opens at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. In celebration of this event and Canada’s 150th birthday, the first 150 guests to arrive at the Quarry will get in for free. Mayor Strathdee will lead a formal ceremony and presentation around 1:15 pm. Following that, the Mayor, Harris and their friends from BX93 will make the first splash off the new cliff jump.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to come to the Quarry and be part of the celebration. Admission after the first 150 guests will only cost a toonie. Regular admission rules and guidelines will apply.
