On Monday, November 26, 2018 the Town of St. Marys received a letter from Maple Leaf Foods announcing its intention to close its plant in the nearby Township of Perth South. The plant is one of three that is being closed to make way for a new, large-scale poultry processing facility that the company is building in London.

Upon hearing the announcement, Mayor Al Strathdee expressed his concern for the impacted employees. “Our thoughts are with all of the employees at the Perth South plant, some of whom are St. Marys residents,” he said. “While we are hopeful that there will be opportunities for these employees at the new facility in London, we recognize the challenges that come with any major transition.”

According to Maple Leaf’s letter, the plant closure is expected to take place between late 2021 and mid-late 2022. The letter also states that current employees will be given priority for jobs at the London facility, and that the company plans to work with local governments to find new uses for the former plants.
