Town updating residents on winter maintenance

Contact Us

The Town of St. Marys has a dedicated response team working to manage approximately 113 km of road lanes and nearly 45 km of sidewalks to keep our community safe this winter. St. Marys follows the provincial standards for winter maintenance as outlined in O. Reg 239/02.

In addition to roads and sidewalks, winter maintenance includes clearing connecting trail links, all municipal facilities walkways and parking lots, as well as municipal public parking lots.

This winter has brought significant snowfall and lower temperatures compared to previous years, leading to larger snowbanks and reduced space for snow storage, making it challenging to fully clear sidewalks. The Town is committed to clearing the roads and sidewalks to the best of our ability while continuing to operate within the provincial standards for winter maintenance.

How can residents help during heavy snowfalls?

  • Be patient as street and sidewalk clearing takes longer with heavy snow accumulations
  • Help neighbors who may struggle to shovel
  • Place waste and recycling bins in your driveway, not on the road, and remove promptly once waste collection is complete.
  • Pile snow on the right side of your driveway to reduce build-up
  • Drive slowly and adjust to weather conditions
  • Allow salt to work on roads before driving
  • Keep driveways clear of snow from street or sidewalk plowing
  • Allow space for operators and snow clearing equipment when blue flashing lights are present

Thank you for your understanding during these winter maintenance challenges.
