Town of St. Marys and UTRCA partnering to increase tree canopy
The Town of St. Marys Green Advisory Committee has partnered with Upper Thames River Conservation Authority (UTRCA) to bring the Tree Power Program to St. Marys residents.
“This program launched last year in Perth South and was such a success, piquing the interest of St. Marys residents. We’re very pleased to bring this program to our town this year.” Says Morgan Dykstra, Public Works and Planning Coordinator for Town of St. Marys. “This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to our urban canopy.”
St. Marys residents can pre-order one of seven different species of native trees to plant on their properties. Trees are available at the subsidized rate of only $20.00 and can be ordered at stmarystreepower.ca starting on September 20 at 10:00 a.m. Trees can then be picked up at the St. Marys Municipal Operations Centre (408 James Street South) on October 15, 2022.
UTRCA Communications and Marketing Specialist Emily Chandler said, “300 trees will be available on a first-come-first-served basis. It’s the first one we’ve done in St. Marys, so I think it will go really well.”
Through the Town’s Forestry Management Plan, the Town of St. Marys has been working to increase the urban canopy on public property and want to encourage residents to plant trees on their private properties as well.
