Volunteer firefighters log over 2,000 hours of training in first half of 2018

In the first six months of 2018, St. Marys’ volunteer firefighters spent over 2,000 hours of their personal time upgrading their skills in order to protect the community.

“This is all time away from our families, and in some cases, our jobs,” said Fire Chief Richard “Andy” Anderson. 

To date, the firefighters have participated in 22 training nights, as well as several National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) courses covering a range of topics, including hazmat awareness, hazardous material operations and legislation. They have also completed the NFPA’s Fire Officer Level I and Fire Service Instructor courses, as well as a Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder course.

“On behalf of the Town of St. Marys, I would like to acknowledge the Fire Department and its volunteers for their ongoing support of our community,” said Mayor Al Strathdee. “We truly appreciate the level of cooperation we receive from our volunteer firefighters. Their commitment to the safety and well-being of others is commendable.”

“We are incredibly fortunate to have such a dedicated group of volunteer firefighters here in St. Marys,” Strathdee continued. “We owe all of our firefighters – both past and present – a tremendous debt of thanks. These individuals consistently volunteer to put themselves in harm’s way for the sake of other people in their community. That is a remarkable thing.”
